The
semifinal playoff matches were played in hot and humid conditions. The course was in surprisingly good shape |
given
the amount of rain that fell as a result of tropical storms Fred and
Henri. After mostly lopsided matches
in the |
quarterfinals,
the semifinal matches were a lot closer. |

In
the first match, Carl Twomey was playing solo again as he took on Bill Meehan
and Peter Morlock on the back |
nine. The teams traded the lead for the first few
holes and the match was tied after the 15th hole. Bill and Peter |
took
all four points on the 16th hole, but Carl took three points on each of the
last two holes to tie the match. The |
teams
split the points for low net to make it a 20-20 tie. Extra holes would be needed to determine
the winner. |

There
was only one problem - Carl was gone.
There was some confusion in the scoring of the match and Carl left |
believing
that he had won before the handicapper could do the official scoring on his
computer. When he was |
|
informed
of the situation, he returned to the course for the sudden death playoff,
which he won on the first extra |
|
hole. |

George
Weigler and John Buscaglia faced Joe Shea and Steve Palmer in the other
semifinal match. Joe and |
|
Steve
built a four point lead after three holes, but George and John fought back
and, like the first match, the teams |
were
tied going to the 16th tee. Joe and
Steve won the next two holes and regained their four point advantage |
|
going
to the 18th hole. After the teams
split the final hole, it would be up to the net scores to determine if a
playoff |
would
be needed for this match as well. John
had the low individual net score, but Joe and Steve took low team |
net
to earn a 22-18 win and move on to the finals. |

with scores of 41 on the front nine. |
Anil
Narwani won a sleeve of balls for the low net score for the week, with a net
score of 5 under par. |
