This Week in Golf – 8/17/2021
The playoffs got under way this week with the quarterfinal round.  By the end of the night, the top eight teams were
cut down to the final four.
In the first match out, both "B" players were absent, so it turned into a head-to-head contest between Jim Geary
and Carl Twomey.  After dropping the first hole, Carl took five out of the next six to build an insurmountable lead
and cruised to a 30-10 victory.
The second match was a lot closer.  Joe Shea and Steve Palmer took an early lead over Nate Cartwright and
Matt Morrell, but Nate and Matt came back.  The match was tied after four holes.  Joe and Steve moved ahead
by taking seven points on the next two holes.  Nate and Matt closed the gap to two points as the match reached
the ninth tee.  The teams split the last hole, which secured the win for Joe and Steve.  The final score was
22-18.
Match three featured second seeded Ivan Audouin and Eric Solomont against the number seven seeds George
Weigler and John Buscaglia.  George and John built a six point lead after three holes, but Ivan and Eric cut the
deficit to two points after the sixth.  George and John took ten points on the final three holes to win the match by a
margin of 27-13.
The top seeds, Ollie Bisson and Norma Giannattasio, faced the eighth seeds Bill Meehan and Peter Morlock in
the final match.  Bill's score of 41 on the front nine was the low gross score for the week, and Peter had another
good round, carding a net score of three under par.  They knocked out Ollie and Norma by a score of  28-12.
Meanwhile, on the back nine, Mike McElhiney had the low net score for the week.  His round of 44 gave him a
net score of 6 under par.  He wins a sleeve of balls for his efforts.  Not a bad way to celebrate a birthday.
