This Week in Golf – 8/27/2019
The playoffs got underway this week with the top eight teams facing off to see who would advance to the
semifinals.
The first match of the night featured a rematch from last week as the top seeded team of Mike McElhiney
and Rich Geary took on Sue Donovan and Jim Geary.  In a reversal of last week's results, Sue and Jim took
the win and advanced.
Steve Schlehuber and Eric Solomont jumped out to an early lead in their match against Glenn Davis and
Greg Martinez.  Glenn and Greg rallied to square the match after seven holes.  The two teams ended up
splitting the points for the nine holes.  Steve and Eric took three of the net points to earn a 21-19 victory.
They will face Sue and Jim next week.
Alan Fraser interrupted his vacation at the Cape to join his partner Bill Meehan for their match against Dave
Gustafson and Jim Stead.  The match was a close one.  Dave and Jim took the  lead on first hole, but the
lead was gone after Bill and Alan won the third hole  The match remained tied through six holes, but Bill
and Alan won two of the last three holes to secure their spot in the semifinals.
The last playoff match was never close, as Joe Shea and Steve Palmer demolished John Buscaglia and Maria
Spitzak.  They did not lose a hole until the ninth, by which time the match had long been decided.  Joe and
Steve will face Bill and Alan in the second semifinal match.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the course, George Weigler and Mary Geary were having a difficult time
finding the tenth green.  After they both chipped over the green, George jokingly wondered which of them
would hit the green first.  He then proceeded to sink his putt from the fringe.  Mary followed suit and
knocked hers in as well.
Bob Paquette finished his round with a birdie on the par 5 18th hole.  It was the only birdie of the week,
unless you count the red-tailed hawk that Carl Twomey spotted on the 11th hole.
