This Week in Golf – 8/10/2017
The regular season closed with another perfect evening for golf.  Hopefully, the run of good weather will
continue through the playoffs.
Two players tied for the low round of the week.  Both Bill Meehan and Chuck Bourgery carded scores of
three over par 38 on the front nine.  Chuck opened with three bogeys and finished with six straight pars.
Bill's round included a birdie on the seventh hole.
Not far behind Chuck and Bill, Maria Spitzak shot a five over par 40 on the front.  With her 15 handicap,
that worked out to a net score of 10 under par 25, easily surpassing the previous Low Net B for the year.
She also recorded her first birdie of the year on the eighth hole.
In the match to determine the top playoff seed, Chuck Bourgery and Carl Taylor took a 22-18 victory over
Joe Shea and Steve Palmer.  That moved Chuck and Carl past Joe and Steve and into the top spot.  Carl
took 10 points in his match with Steve.  Would that be enough to hold off the pursuers in the Aggie race?
Dan Sherman had a good round and took 11 points.  That put him into a tie with Carl.  Maria's fine round
netted her 14 points to join the tie.  Eric Solomont took 10 points in his match, which left him one point
short.  Rick Kilduff was the last player with a chance to overtake the leaders, but he split his match to
finish two points back.  That means that Dan, Maria and Carl will share the Aggie trophy - the first tie since
2002 and the first three-way tie in league history.  Congratulations to all three.
The ninth place team of Eric Solomont and Ivan Audouin topped the seventh place team of Carl Twomey
and Jim Stead by a score of 21-19.  That gave Carl and Jim enough points to keep their playoff spot.
It also gave Eric and Ivan enough points to squeak past Mike McElhiney and Rich Geary and claim the last
playoff spot by a single point.
