This Week in Golf – 8/24/2017
The four remaining teams faced off in the semifinal round on another sunny and warm evening.
The first match featured John Buscaglia and Mike Mancini against Eric Solomont and Ivan Audouin.  Eric
and Ivan jumped out to the early lead by taking all four points on the first hole.  John and Mike bounced
back and squared the match after the third hole.  Eric and Ivan took a two point lead after winning the
fourth hole and stretched the lead to four after the seventh.  John and Mike took all four points on the
eighth hole to even the match.  Ivan had a putt to win it on the  ninth, but could not convert.  The teams
split the hole and the net points, so it was on to sudden death.
The tenth hole was halved, so the match continued to the eleventh.  John, Eric and Ivan were all in trouble
off the tee, while Mike was just off the putting surface.  He chipped it to within a few inches and par was
conceded.  Ivan was unable to make his par chip, so Eric would have to win the hole to keep the match
going.  He and John each faced long bogey putts.  John lagged his close and tapped in for five.  Eric's putt
slipped past the hole and the match was over.
In the second match, Jim Geary and Dan Sherman faced Carl Twomey and Jim Stead.  The match was
another close one.  The two teams split the first four holes, with the two Jims taking all the points.  Carl
got his first point on the fifth hole, as he and Jim took a two point lead.  Jim and Dan turned the tables on
the next hole by taking all four points.  The lead was extended to four points after they took three points
on the eighth.
Facing a four point deficit on the ninth, Carl and Jim would both need to win the last hole.  They would do
just that, thanks in part to a birdie by Carl.  The match was even and the teams split the net points.  Like
the first match, it was a 20-20 tie and the two teams would play on.
The tenth hole was halved, thanks to Jim and Jim.  This match, too, would go to the eleventh hole.  Also
like the first match, the B players would decide the match as Jim G. split the hole with Carl, but Jim S. won
the hole from Dan.
Next week, John and Mike will meet Carl and Jim in the championship match.  The two teams did not play
during the regular season.  Eric and Ivan take on Jim and Dan in the consolation match with third place
prize money on the line.
In other news, Rich Geary was celebrating his (redacted)th birthday.  He did manage to shoot better than
his age.
