This Week in Golf – 8/17/2017
The playoffs got underway this week with the top eight teams battling to move on to the next round.  The
teams were treated to another fine night.  The course was playing firm and fast.
The first match saw the top seeds Chuck Bourgery and Carl Taylor facing Eric Solomont and Ivan Audouin.
The match was back and forth for the first three holes, but Eric and Ivan took four of the next five holes.
Chuck made a birdie on the ninth hole, as he and Carl won the hole, but by then the match had already
been decided in favor of their opponents.
In match number two, Steve Palmer was left to fend for himself against Carl Twomey and Jim Stead.
Steve held a four point lead as they played the fifth hole, but the tide turned after an unfortunate error
when Steve hit his opponent's ball.  Carl and Jim rallied after that and took the match.  Were it not for the
penalty, the match would have had to go to sudden death.
Fresh off her best round ever, Maria Spitzak looked to continue her good play as she and Dan Lee faced
Jim Geary and Dan Sherman in the third match of the evening.  Maria had another good round with a 46,
but Dan Sherman matched her score.  Jim and Dan Lee also had matching scores, but Jim was getting
five strokes from Dan.  That allowed Jim and Dan to advance.
In the last match, it looked like John Buscaglia and Mike Mancini would cruise to an easy victory as they
built an 11-1 lead over George Weigler after three holes.  George fought back, winning the fourth, seventh
and eighth holes.  The lead had been trimmed to just two points as the match reached the ninth tee.
George had a par putt to take all four points, but it just missed.  The two teams split the hole and the
points for net score.  That gave John and Mike a 21-19 win.
In each of the four matches, the lower seeded team prevailed.  Next week, John and Mike will face Eric and
Ivan, while Jim and Dan take on Carl and Jim.
